In Deshaies, plans have a habit of changing. A quick stop at the beach turns into a lazy afternoon, lunch by the sea lasts longer than expected, and every bend in the road reveals another beautiful cove or viewpoint. With its charming fishing village, some of Guadeloupe's most stunning beaches and lush tropical scenery, Deshaies is the perfect place to slow down. Here are our favourite ways to experience it.
Nestled along Guadeloupe's Leeward Coast, on the northwestern side of Basse-Terre, Deshaies is one of the island's oldest towns. Founded in the 17th century, it first developed around its natural harbor, with fishing and the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, and vanilla flourishing on the surrounding hillsides. In Guadeloupean Creole, Deshaies is known as Déhé, and its residents are called Deshaisiens.
Few visitors realize that Deshaies has become famous far beyond the Caribbean thanks to the British television series Death in Paradise, which has been filmed in the village since 2011. The police station seen on screen is actually the town's church, transformed for filming, while many of the village streets and the waterfront regularly appear throughout the series.
